Dear john - Nicholas sparks

What happened in the book?

This book is about a boy called John Tyree, who falls in love with a girl named Savannah Lynn Curtis. This girl changes his life completely and teaches him lessons in life and pretty much makes him a better person.
John grew up with his dad by his side all his life, but there was something strange about his dad. His dad didn't know how to develop a conversation and always lived by routine. He always made lasagna on Sundays, always went to work at 7:35 and always came back at the same time. And his big life passion was coins. He had the biggest coin collection ever and that was all he talked about.

When John brought Savannah home, she realized all these thing and she wanted to help John know that his dad had Autism or Asberger's. When john found out what she thought about his father he got really mad. He couldn't believe that Savannah could say all those things about his father, he knew that he wasn't normal but he didn't want anyone else to say it out loud. Like I said, John got pretty mad and just yelled at her all the time. But then he realized that maybe she was right, maybe he had autism or asberger's syndrome.

After two weeks together with Savannah he had to leave with the navy to Germany and then to Kosovo to keep it calm down there. He was devastated that he had to leave Savannah but he knew that the distance would get in the way of their love. So they kept on writing letters to each other and described what the day was all about. And in the end of the letter they always told each other how big their love was and how much they missed each other.
When one year went by it was time for John to get back for his leave again. When he got back he spent almost everyday with Savannah, but also with his dad. The bond between him and his dad got a lot tighter and for the first time when he got back to the navy after his leave he actually missed his dad.

He went back to the navy with his "buddies" and just as they were about to go to Kosovo, 9/11 happened in America. And for an instant all his life and planes changed and they started the mission in iraq and the war down there started. And because of that he couldn't meet Savannah for another 2 years. The news where devastating for both of them, but they still fought for their love everyday.
By the time he was there he realized that his letters from Savannah didn't come once a week as usual but they started to come every ten days, or twice a month, and she didn't "sound" the same, she didn't tell him she loved him the way he was used to. And after pretty much a year he received a letter that broke everything up. In that letter she told him that as much as she loved him she couldn't wait for him to come back, and in the end she said that she was in love with another one.
John was as crushed as a person could be, but he never stopped loving her.

As the years went by John's dad, died. So on the day of his funeral he decided he had to meet someone. Of course it was Savannah, so he went to her hometown and found her there. When he met her he got crushed inside again. He couldn't bare to see her knowing that she wasn't with him anymore, but with another man. But when he was there standing in front of her, he couldn't go back. So he just stood there watching her from the tip of her toes back up until saw her beautiful face that looked back at him, inspecting every little thing on him.
After a couple minutes of chit-chatting Savannah asked him if he was hungry and wanted food. At first he was skeptic of the thought of her husband coming home finding them there eating dinner, but then he couldn't resist her sad eyes filled with so much lust and expectation that he finally said yes to dinner.

They talked a lot about the years that had passed by, while they were so far away from each other. And finally they came to the question that John had been dying to know: Who the lucky man was that got to marry the girl of his dreams. And she told him. It was Tim. Tim, the man John got to know the day he met Savannah, the man who always looked out for her and the man that actually was a good man. He knew that Tim was a good man, but he couldn't accept the fact that he got Savannah. Even though he knew Tim was good for her.
John asked Savannah where Tim was, but she didn't reply with an answer. Instead she replied with another question asking if John would come back tomorrow.

The next day John came back for Savannah. Before he even got out of the car, he saw her slowly running toward the other side of the car telling him to stay where he was. She only told him that they were going somewhere, not where and not why, just that he had to drive and that it wasn't that far away. So as usual he did what she said and started driving out of the parking lot and drove all the way into town.
When he stopped the car he realized they were outside the hospital. He looked over at Savannah wanting to ask a question but hesitated the second he saw her despairing glance. Instead he followed her in to the hospital waiting for some good explaining, that never came. When they finally arrived to where they were going, Savannah opened a door where he saw what he never expected to see. Tim, laying on his bed, with no hair on his head and only with a weak expression of what seemed to look like a smile.

He had a sever cancer running trough his body, tearing him apart inch by inch, but Tim didn't give up. There were still hope that he could survive, only if they got enough money to pay off the operation.
The whole town was already giving all they could but it sure wasn't enough. John knew that if Tim died, Savannah and him would get back together, but he just couldn't be that selfish with her. So he knew what he had to do.

He went home, to his father's place and talked to his lawyer. He said that he wanted to sell the house and that he wanted his father's coins -which he had the right to have-. He got the coins and went to a coin collection shop and sold all of the coins his dad had collected through the years -without one, the special one he kept to himself- and donated them to a man who had cancer, Tim.

After a month he got a letter from Savannah telling him that Tim have had an anonymous donation that helped him pay for the operation, also telling him that he made it and he was all fine. That was also the last time he heard from Savannah, but he knew that their love hadn't stopped even it they weren't together or seeing each other.
